What you Should know about Starting a Non-Profit

Registering a nonprofit is easy if one knows all the steps. What may be challenging is starting the work and building a long-lasting organization which takes good planning and loads of determination. It helps to be fully prepared and to understand every part of nonprofit work.

What one needs to know

The process of starting a successful nonprofit is rather lengthy but it helps if one knows the following.

Know the mission

One should start by putting together a strong mission statement that summarizes and clearly communicates the mission of the organization to donors, funding bodies and constituents. The statement should put emphasis on the work and relationships of the organization and be able to guide its growth.

A strong leadership team is necessary

A person who wants to start on the right footing and successfully run a nonprofit should find a group of people who share the vision, and are passionate and committed to the mission. Out of the group will arise a strong team of leaders (CEO and the board) and even volunteers.

An online fundraising tool helps

Starting a nonprofit means being very busy all the time. Finding fundraising software online for accepting donations in advance helps. It’s even better if one can find an all-in-one platform for donations, events and data reporting.

The nonprofit must be registered

Before starting the nonprofit, it has to be registered. The first part is writing up the articles of incorporation. This will require the legal name of the organization, its official location and the names and addresses of the trustees. Visit this site for more information and assistance with registration.

The nonprofit needs bylaws

The nonprofit’s leadership team must draft the founding bylaws to guide its operations, internal culture and functions for years to come. The bylaws are also required for receiving the tax-exempt or 501c(3) status. They should include the organizational structure, the mission statement, donation solicitation protocols, etc.

Tax-exempt status is necessary

Acquiring 501c(3) status from the IRS is important for claiming the nonprofit organization status, and for donors to deduct donations for tax purposes. This step normally follows registration, writing of bylaws and receiving an employer identification number from the IRS. Receiving 501c(3) status may take some time.

Startup funding is needed

Any work done for the nonprofit needs money. Finding startup funding can be challenging if the founder of a nonprofit has no money set aside. Still, nonprofit startup grants are available from corporations, private foundations and the city, state and federal governments. It’s best to apply to them to get initial funding to begin operations.

Networking is crucial for success

Partners to support the launch of the nonprofit are crucial for success, so it’s important to build and expand local networks. These may be local businesses, schools, universities, other nonprofits, and local municipal offices. The nonprofit can leverage existing relationships to approach donors, expand relationships and to engage constituents through events.

The community needs to be actively engaged

Social media pages help to convey the mission, announce events, share fundraising initiatives, and direct followers to the online donation page. If created carefully, the donation page can have tap-to-share social media buttons for followers to quickly share the nonprofit’s news. Email campaigns and regular blogs on the website also help.

The leaders need professional networks

The leadership team will find that developing a wide professional network has immense value. Other professionals who believe in the nonprofit’s mission will happily promote its work to their own audiences online. The leaders can therefore connect to other local nonprofits, regional nonprofits with a similar mission, their professional associations, digital outlets (blogs and news channels that focus on nonprofits), and other media outlets. It is a bit like Joseph Lizyness, the serial entrepreneur says: “A non profit relies on the goodwill of your network to reach into the hearts of communities for a good cause. Using TRUiC is certainly a great start”.

Good planning is essential for growth

After working hard to launch the organization, it’s important to plan for, and invest in, the nonprofit’s future growth. This can be achieved through strategic planning, the use of an adaptable CRM system, an automated marketing system, a new digital donation tool (or platform), and member management tools.
