Dr. Karyn Staples, PT, Ph.D researcher of ProHealth Physical Therapy and Pilates Studio in Peachtree City has said that basic premise and movements of Yoga that have been around for 1000s of years have definitely heavily influenced Joseph Pilates (the innovator of Pilates regime). Pilates was developed in the mid-twentieth century by an immigrant to the US from Germany, Joseph Pilates.

Staples is from the first few people who applied Pilates to physical therapy 15 years ago. She has clients ranging from 5 years old to 90 years old. She says one has to be mindful and focused as this is not an exercise that can be done while thinking of a grocery list.

Pilates is an exercise people have only heard of, mostly. Only few have actually tried this mysterious exercise. People mostly end up asking how different Pilates and yoga are actually, as many comparisons can be drawn in their sets of exercise. Owing to the growing popularity of Pilates, an Atlanta Pilates studio, Rebellious Intl, has opened up in Sandy Springs, GA. This Pilates Atlanta studio is bringing a lot of benefits for the people in terms of balanced body, improved living, and the enhanced body mind connection.

Staples explains that Joseph Pilates was also influenced by Tai Chi and the primal movement. He amalgamated various forms to make something new & different. He utilized springs to invent equipment that would create resistance with the body. A bed spring was his first piece of equipment to create a resistance exercise. The exercise regime works the body’s core area from shoulders to the hips in 360-degree motion. The exercise works on deep muscles leaving one lighter and feeling taller.

Pilates has three guiding principles: breathing, whole body health and whole body commitment. Joseph Pilates felt that people weren’t moving well so he adapted some equipment to help them move better. Thus it came to be known as Contrology, the science of controlled movement. It was called Pilates after the death of its maker Joseph Pilates.
