A Closer Look at the Two-Post Auto Lift

What drew you to the world of writing and editing, and what keeps you passionate about it today?

I’ve always gravitated towards all things literary. Reading is my favorite pastime, so moving into a career in writing and editing was a natural and organic process. Although most of the projects I take on are in the fields of technical writing and marketing, I bring my passion for wordsmithing and crafting clear and engaging writing to everything I do. I am energized whenever I start a new project, whether it’s for a longstanding client or a new client. There’s just something about the blank page that is inviting to me, as it signifies an opportunity to create, imagine, and explore.

Literary Influences

Can you describe a piece of writing—yours or someone else’s—that profoundly impacted you?

There are so many pieces that have affected me over the years, so it’s a daunting task to identify one specific text on its own. The first piece of writing that comes to mind at the moment is Percival Everett’s brilliant and moving novel, James, which was released last year. This retelling of Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn from the perspective of Jim was so thoughtfully and masterfully done that I found myself rereading passages as I went along because they were simply so piercing, heartbreaking, or moving. His command of language is unparalleled, and this novel has reignited my appreciation of sentence structure, word choices, and syntax at a more granular level. It’s rare for a piece of writing to align so beautifully in its ability to use linguistic choices to elevate the power of its messages and themes.

Crafting Narratives

What is your process for bringing the vision of a piece of writing to life?

Since the bulk of my professional writing centers on marketing a client’s services or explaining complex concepts in an accessible way, I usually begin by identifying and defining the target audience. Effective and impactful writing can only do its job if the readers are able to connect and engage with it. Once I’ve determined who my readers are (i.e., potential legal clients looking for an attorney, or someone wanting to start a new business, to name a few examples), I can structure my writing to appeal to their interests and concerns. I also believe in revising each draft from the perspective of the reader to make sure that it will resonate with them once it’s published. Updating the client as I move through each draft is also key, as I rely on their input and feedback to ensure that the final product meets (and hopefully exceeds) their expectations.

Balancing Creativity and Precision

How do you balance creativity with the technical aspects of editing?

While the editing process tends to involve my technical skills and eye for detail, this doesn’t mean that creativity does not play a role during the editing process. I find that approaching a draft from various perspectives ensures that the final product is not just technically accurate and readable but that it also engages the intended readers in meaningful and impactful ways. For instance, I harness my creativity during the editing process when I review a draft from the perspective of someone coming across this content for the first time. Does the draft address their concerns and answer their questions? Does it break down complex topics in a clear and effective way? The more I can anticipate the impressions of potential readers, the more effective and engaging the final piece can be.

Overcoming Creative Challenges

What’s one project that challenged you in unexpected ways, and what did you learn from it?

Most of the time, the clients I work with have pretty clear goals that they can communicate to me fairly easily. However, one attorney-client I worked with was unsure about what he wanted from his website, and he pretty much let me put a draft together while trusting my professional instincts. At first, I was slightly intimidated by this unusual degree of freedom, and I found myself struggling a bit with where to begin. Once I reassessed the situation and acknowledged that he was trusting me to build an impactful website, I felt more confident and empowered to proceed. When I presented the attorney with the initial drafts of his website pages, he was pleased with the content and offered minimal edits or suggestions. This experience was a meaningful opportunity for me to grow as a professional and recognize my talents in an unexpected way.

Ideal Collaborations

If you could collaborate with any writer, past or present, who would it be and why?

Writing is such an intriguing process, as it can be intensely personal and isolating and then swing dramatically to become a collaborative endeavor. If I had the chance to collaborate with any writer, I would be curious to work with Kate Chopin. Her short stories were masterful in their ability to subvert and upend the reader’s expectations in so few words. I would love to observe her at work on one of these short stories, as I would be curious to know whether she began the process with the ending clearly sketched out or if the ending came to her as she laid the groundwork for the beginning of the story. Additionally, I would be fascinated by her process for selecting words, as her novels and short stories contain such precise and memorable turns of phrase—many of which ooze sarcasm and support scathing critiques of society.

Thank you, Francesca Cronan, for sharing your insights, experiences, and passion for storytelling with us. Your dedication to the craft of writing and your ability to bring words to life in meaningful ways are truly inspiring. We appreciate your time and collaboration and look forward to seeing how your journey continues to unfold—both on the page and in the kitchen.
