Marching to the beat of your own drum can be quite a challenge, especially when the whole world is swaying to another kind of rhythm. Nowadays, people’s idea of finding a place in society means following what everyone else is doing because otherwise, you don’t belong.
But this is a misconception Brandon Mesén wants to rectify through his music. He brings with him the message that it is okay to be different. Embrace your weirdness.
Brandon Mesén, more popularly known as Mesén Around, has played around five hundred (500) shows and has been aired on around one hundred (100) radio stations. He was recently on JUKA Radio in Germany, with over seventy thousand (70,000) people tuning in.
Ever since he was little, Brandon already knew that he was meant to create music and to share this talent with the world. In fact, one of the highlights of his childhood included him going to his parents’ bedroom and looking right in the mirror, where he would see himself playing music in front of screaming fans. As a young kid, he always found himself humming and tapping on the school desks as he was trying to get in tune with the beat that was playing inside his mind. He would often get in trouble just for being himself.
At the wee age of six, his mom gave him his first miniature drum kit, and it was what gave his rhythm skills a kickstart. At that point in his life, he had no clue music could be a profession. He was just doing it for fun and ‘messing around.’ The actual reckoning point for him was when, at the age of fifteen, his old friend from school gave him a small black ukelele. From there, he began to focus on songwriting and perfecting his craft. Brandon’s mother took notice of how he got so engrossed in music. And so on Brandon’s sixteenth birthday, his mother gave him his first-ever acoustic guitar. Holding the instrument, he told himself that he was also going to hold on to his musical calling no matter what.
Brandon’s career started out by playing barefoot on the streets of West Chester, Pennsylvania. Back then, he was just making around $100 for 3 hours worth of performing. But he told himself that if he could get through that phase, then he could do just about anything. He started to contact smaller venues and coffee shops and booked himself some gigs. This went on for five years. But being the gifted weird kid that he is, it was easy for the whole world to fall in love with him. His shows got bigger, and the records got better and led him to where he is now.
From his humble beginnings in the streets, Brandon Mesén is currently making his way up to the big leagues with top-selling albums and records which prove to be smash hits. Word about Brandon’s new album – Feels Good To Be A Weird Kid – has been circulating around the web for over a year now. Fans have been up on their toes, but the wait is finally over because the album is already bound for release this summer. Together with this album, Brandon is also planning to drop a book for all the ‘weird kids’ out there.
Brandon wishes to win some Grammy Awards and to tour all around Europe while raising the banners of peace, love, and music. He encourages everyone to never shy away from being themselves because nothing would be sadder than having to give up who you truly are for the sake of belonging.
In multiple interviews, Brandon would say that he named his upcoming album “Feels Good To Be A Weird Kid” simply because he wants everyone to stop feeling bad about themselves for being different. Further, he reminds us that there is nothing wrong with being weird and that society doesn’t get to decide who belongs and who doesn’t. Self-discovery is all about liberating oneself from the chains the world has wrapped around them and listening to the inner voice without all the external noise.
Brandon’s music may be for everyone, but it is especially for those who have been bullied and looked down on just for being different. It is for those who feel lost so they may be able to find their place again in this world. Indeed, his music is more than just for entertainment – it is an advocacy. Brandon wants his music to be a platform for justice to those being shunned away by society just for being ‘weird’. No one should ever have to hide their genuine selves and suppress how they truly feel. Everybody deserves to express their identities.
