Unfortunately, we live in a world where people with disabilities often face exclusion and discrimination — often for reasons entirely outside their control. Especially after such individuals leave the public school system, there are few places where they can find community, support, and career opportunities.

The Next Step Programs (TNS) were created to fill this void, instituting a mission to empower people with disabilities and provide them with the tools they need to lead independent and fulfilling lives.

Planting the seeds of future success

In 2014, the seeds of TNS were sown when the organization’s co-founders, Joshua Fields, and Richard Price, spent their summer volunteering at a camp catering to individuals with Down syndrome. Their interactions with these young adults and their families unveiled a pressing concern — the scarcity of opportunities for their futures.

The issue hit close to home for both co-founders; Ricky had personally witnessed the challenges faced by his brother, who has a disability in securing employment after completing school, while Josh had a close friend who had undergone a similar experience. Despite only being in high school and college themselves, Josh and Ricky were resolute in their determination to address this significant problem head-on.

TNS began in Doylestown, PA, but quickly expanded due to its resounding success. The organization currently serves over 150 young adults in six counties within the state of Pennsylvania, including Allegheny, Bucks, Chester, Cumberland, Lancaster, and Montgomery counties.

Remaining focused on improving quality of life

At the heart of TNS is a comprehensive range of services designed to enhance the quality of life for individuals with disabilities. Participating in the organization’s innovative programs allows young adults to learn the necessary skills for employment and independent living, all while having fun engaging in activities and building a community of friends and peers.

One of the program’s cornerstones is its tailored vocational training, as TNS recognizes that gainful employment is a crucial aspect of leading an independent life. With this understanding, the organization equips participants with the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in the workforce. Their person-centered approach ensures that every program participant receives personalized support and guidance to achieve their employment goals by helping them foster a sense of confidence and self-reliance.

However, TNS’s impact goes beyond just job training. Their programs are designed to make a long-term impact. The organization has cultivated a supportive environment where participants can connect with their peers, mentors, and industry professionals, creating valuable networking opportunities that can be transformative in their professional journeys. TNS also actively promotes inclusive employment practices by collaborating with local businesses to ensure diversity and equal opportunities in the workplace.

Support does not end when individuals secure employment, as TNS provides ongoing assistance while they continue navigating their careers. Job coaching, mentoring, and professional development opportunities are part of the package to ensure that all program participants are never left to face challenges alone.

Education is also at the core of TNS’s approach. Through partnerships with local educational institutions, the organization facilitates educational opportunities and promotes lifelong learning for students with disabilities. Emphasis is placed on continuous growth and personal development, extending far beyond simple academic knowledge. Participants can join evening skill-building classes, where they safely learn about useful topics and skills such as cooking, laundry, personal hygiene, grocery shopping, and more.

But what is a career and an individual apartment without friends to share it with? TNS is also dedicated to helping young adults with disabilities form full lives and build meaningful relationships. They offer weekend “Friends Night Out” programs where participants can partake in activities such as movie nights, sports games, bowling, or painting, allowing them to bond with other people with similar experiences and interests. This upcoming August, TNS is debuting their Explore+ trip, an overnight program on the beautiful Lake Michigan full of numerous educational and friend-building activities.

Striving to make a global impact

In addition to its local impact, TNS actively collaborates with community organizations and government agencies to further champion disability rights and strive for the full inclusion of disabled individuals in every facet of society. The organization’s tireless efforts in raising awareness about disability issues aim to foster a more inclusive and barrier-free society, creating ample opportunities for disabled individuals to flourish and reach their fullest potential.

The impact of TNS extends beyond the numbers — it is measured in the smiles on the faces of individuals who have discovered newfound abilities and a sense of accomplishment in achieving their dreams. It is seen in the relationships built within the program, forging bonds that last a lifetime. Indeed, TNS has created a supportive and nurturing environment where each person’s unique journey is celebrated and cherished.

The success stories that have emerged from TNS are testaments to the organization’s commitment to making a real difference in the lives of those they serve. Participants who were once uncertain about their futures are now thriving in their careers and pursuing their passions and hobbies.

TNS believes in the potential of every individual. The organization’s unwavering support continues to inspire a sense of hope and resilience that knows no bounds.

Looking ahead, The Next Step Programs continue to evolve, adapt, and expand their offerings to meet the ever-changing needs of individuals with disabilities. The organization’s co-founders envision a future where disability is not seen as a limitation but rather as a unique characteristic that enriches the fabric of society.

As The Next Step Programs continue to make strides and touch lives, they inspire us all to take the next step towards a brighter, more inclusive future for everyone.
