Have you ever noticed how many of the most popular activities are tabletop games? What is it about them that makes them so popular? What entices people to play them? And what games are we even talking about?

There are four main types of tabletop games: RPGs, Tabletop games, board games, and CCG (collectible card games).

What is the Difference?

RPGs

A true RPG usually involves the player creating a character with complete control over their lives. These are available in varying levels of control. You will have control over their decisions, where they go, when they go, and what they are good at, and there is no right or wrong way to play the game. Games such as Dungeons & Dragons, or Pathfinder, are categorized as RPGs.

Tabletop Miniatures Wargames

Then there are tabletop wargames that usually require two players. The key feature are collecting and assembling miniature armies that will fight it out across a tabletop. These mIniature wargames can be quite complex, and require dedication, but will provide enjoyment for years and years, as well as a large community of players, from casual to competitive. Games such as Warhammer 40,000, Star Wars LEGION, Kings of War, and Pathfinder are categorized as Tabletop Miniature Wargames.

Board Games

Board games are tabletop games that typically use pieces that can be moved or placed on a pre-marked board (playing surface) and frequently incorporate elements of table, card, role-playing, and miniatures games.

The majority involve competition between two or more players. There are tens of thousands of these types of board games. Playtimes can be a matter of minutes up to days, based on the board game’s complexity. Rules can be very simple, as in childrens favorites like Snakes and Ladders, or extremely complex, as in Twilight Imperium. With such a largepool of games, there are perfect board games for you, no matter what you taste.

CCG (Collectible Card Games)

A collectible card game (CCG), sometimes known as a trading card game (TCG) or a customizable card game, is a type of card game that uses a specially designed deck of cards. While trading cards have been around longer, collectible card games (CCGs) combine the appeal of collecting with strategic gameplay. New cards for these games are released regularly, and CCGs are never truly “complete”. They are eternally growing and changing, so players are always collecting and working on their next deck.  The biggest, most successful CCG in the world is Magic: The Gathering.
