According to research, the average woman owns 103 items of clothing and 24 pairs of shoes. In addition to accessories like handbags, hats, scarves, and belts, that’s a lot of storage needed. If you’re living in a small one-bedroom apartment, the thought of storing this much fashion apparel can be quite daunting.

Luckily, storing items efficiently is a matter of technique as opposed to space, which means that you can optimize your storage solutions no matter the size of your home. Whether you’re looking to completely revamp your fashion storage or just make a few alterations, with a few simple DIY hacks your clothes can be on their way to a much more spacious home. You don’t have to be Jess Crow to handle some of these DIY storage hacks: they’re manageable even for amateurs!

Hanging Rails

Whether you have a walk-in wardrobe or a standalone fashion closet that sits in the corner of your bedroom, there are many ways to improve your storage solutions. One huge essential factor in clothing storage is hanging rails – without one, where would you hang your clothes? If you’re building your own storage space, all you need is a metal or wooden rail and a few screws so that you can drill it securely in place. The same can be said for modifying a current closet as there’s nothing stopping you from adding an additional rail.

Drawers and Shelving

Essential for items that are a little more crease-resistant like underwear, socks, and jeans, drawers and shelving are handy for spare space underneath hanging rails where items can be neatly folded away. Making your own drawers is a little more complicated than shelving, so if you want an efficient and less time-consuming means of assembling the storage, it may be in your best interest to purchase pre-made drawers.

As for shelving, all you need is some sturdy planks of wood that you can paint in your choice of color. Then, some screws and strong adhesive glue to hold them into place; as you’re likely to store heavy material like denim in these areas, choosing a strong glue is vital as it will give your shelving unit an extra layer of stability.

Shoe Rack

If you have 24 pairs of shoes, you’ll undoubtedly want to avoid a stack of 24 shoe boxes, occupying room in your precious, albeit limited living space. Ideally, you want your shoes to be individually stored in their own compartments so that it’s easy to find a pair and to avoid absolute shoe chaos every time you’re seeking a set-out.

Utilizing the aforementioned shelving could be a simple solution, though there are other options too. For the adventurous, a bit of PVC pipe can go a long way and will add a dimension of shape to your closet. All you need to do is cut the pipe into your desired size and decorate it as you see fit; a bit of wallpaper goes a long way here! If you’re stacking your shoe-friendly PVC pipe on top of one another, some strong wire can come in handy to keep them all in place, in addition to some superglue.

From simple storage solutions to adventurous DIY hacks, there are many ways you can give your closet a new lease of life. We have provided just a few examples that we hope will help your clothes feel secure in their new home.
