There’s a power behind words that brings healing to people from all walks of life. Someone who embodies this statement completely, is spoken word artist and poet Christi Steyn. The poet from South Africa has been building quite a following on social media even amid the global pandemic for her insightful and touching words that come with a fun-loving flavor.

Originally an actress and model, Christi has started to gain digital renown for her poetry. She started performing spoken word on her social media channels when the Coronavirus pandemic erupted and gathered traction from her posts. She has amassed quite a following on channels like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube.

To date, the poet now has over 210,000 followers on Instagram and 1.1 million followers on TikTok. She also has a growing following on YouTube with over 2,000 subscribers and over 100,000 views on the video streaming platform. For Christi, poetry isn’t simply a way to pass the time. Her goal is to make people fall in love, once more with the simple beauty and healing capacity of words spoken in affirmation.

The poet believes that there is power in words. “It’s an ingredient to self-care,” she explains. Christi is more than ready to share her work with anyone who loves writing and poetry or is simply passing by her news feed. She mostly writes around themes of embracing one’s true self, being kind, and accepting one’s deepest imperfections.

“I want to change the way we talk about ourselves because the language that we use doesn’t have to cause harm,” the poet adds. “Anyone looking for growth and reflection is my audience.”

Christi Steyn introduces a youthful sense of fun to her work by adding abstract themes. Her work mesmerizes, even as she dives into more serious themes and topics as well. Living in New York during the COVID-19 pandemic definitely produced a lot of relevant and necessary content for the world to consume. Her work is a time-capsule of the hard times that we have endured and she gives perspective on how to cope with topics like isolation and mental health.  She has a soothing delivery that can transport someone to a new world, despite being riddled with life’s worries and fears. Amid the growing turmoil the world has seen in the last several months, Christi’s work has provided a form of escape for those who need a break from reality’s harshness.

As a well-read artist and poet, Christi Steyn also loves to introduce her audiences to other writers and broaden their perspectives on the literary genre. But she never fails to deliver something fresh, as the poet always has another verse to give to her audiences through her social media platforms.

When she isn’t busy creating new poetry for her followers, Christi spends her time growing her modeling career. She flies back and forth between Cape Town and New York for work and loves to insert some poetry writing on her favorite topics like self-love, body positivity, and overall wellness. Christi has worked alongside many brands, such as Pattern Village, Skoon Skincare, Movepretty, and The Nomo Hotel, to name a few. She has also appeared in various publications for her poetry and other works, including Buzzfeed, Unilad, Forbes, Perlu, and so on.

Christi hopes that her poetry will continue to introduce people to the beauty of spoken word and other literary genres. She also hopes that more people will start to embrace self-love as a way of life after listening to her thoughts expressed in rhyme and rhythm.
