We all enjoy different sports. Some people like watching athletes participating in marathons and can spend hours following the action. Others prefer fast-paced events like boxing, where one knockout is enough to bring the game to an end. We all seek something different from sports, but we can all agree that they are unique events that inspire teamwork and camaraderie across the globe. So, it’s great to see some top bookies like Unibet expanding their markets to cover more sports. Whether you are after the top leagues or want to wager on some lesser-known events, you will find a bookie serving your market.

We look at the most common sports people bet on and why:

Which Sports Attract Punters the Most?

Your favorite sport may be popular in your country but may not have as much traction in other places. Are you curious about the sports that make it to the list? Let’s get into it:

1. Soccer (Football)

Some people call it football, while others call it soccer. Regardless of the name you use, the game is the same – eleven men on each side trying their best to score a goal. Soccer attracts punters due to various reasons:

  • It is fast-paced: Each minute leads to an even more exciting one. One minute, one team may look like it has the upper hand with great possession. The next, the opponent team has bagged a corner kick, and one of their players has scored a header goal.
  • It has a large audience: Supporting a sport with worldwide fans is always great. You can connect with fans in Europe or other parts of the world based on your love for the sport. Even if you do not back the same team, you will still have common ground.
  • It has exciting matches: Soccer boasts various big sporting events. If you are not following the World Cup, you have your eyes fixed on the English Premier League, Bundesliga, and many others. Punters always have the chance to seek out the best events and wager on them, striking while the iron is hot.

Of course, the fact that so many bookies offer soccer as a top option has also pushed more people to wager on it.

2. Tennis

Would you believe that tennis made the list? Many people might not understand why this somewhat quiet and moderately paced sport would make the cut. But if we are to judge by its fans and punters across the globe, it can tug on your heartstrings. Why?

  • It is highly profitable: You may have noticed that good tennis players live quite an enviable life. They make enough money to live off their skills and can invest and reinvest their earnings several times over. But the spoils do not only go to the players. They also extend to punters who make the correct picks. You can become a professional tennis punter by mastering the rules and sticking to specific markets for a high return on income.
  • It is easy to understand: Tennis is not too complicated, unlike many other games. After watching a game, you can tell what kinds of bets you can place on the game. Whether it’s singles or doubles, following tennis comes easy, even to the beginner.

Let’s not forget that tennis also boasts many big events like the US Open, where you can earn good money by making accurate predictions.

3. Horse Racing

Back even before online bookies existed, horse racing was still a thing. People loved to flock to the races, pick a winning horse and watch the races, cheering on their jockeys. Even after the internet spread like wildfire and other betting options emerged, many people stayed true to their roots. Why?

  • The adrenaline rush: Once you have chosen a horse as a sure winner, you cannot help but back it with all your might. You almost want to help the horse and the jockey across the finishing line. And because the races are always so cutthroat, every second counts and your horse could win in a split second.
  • The payouts: Anyone who has bet on a horse and won will tell you there is good money in horse racing. After all, most people back the horses with everything they have. So, if they have $100 and place the bet on a horse with 5.60 odds and it wins, they end up with $560! The key is to back the horse with the highest chance of winning and to give it your all.

It also helps that many bookies now offer horse racing as an option. As a bonus, they cover several markets outside the USA by venturing into the UK, Singapore, and other areas where horse racing has a large audience.

Other popular sports include American football, basketball, rugby, and golf. Whether you are betting on football, basketball, or a local sporting event, the premise is quite simple. All punters should:

  1. Understand the workings of the game by watching a few matches to get the hang of things,
  2. Get to know how odds work and why they are not always indicative of the situation on the ground,
  3. Learn how to conduct research on teams and how to leave emotions out of the analysis,
  4. Figure out how much money they can spend on wagers without dipping into their savings,
  5. Find a good bookie with competitive odds, and
  6. Start small.

If you follow these principles, you can succeed in betting on any sport.
