It is so astounding to learn about all those individuals and professionals who, instead of waiting for opportunities to reach them, go out of their ways to create opportunities for themselves. It is necessary today to hold more talks around these individuals whose success stories have the power to imbue more hope and positivity in others, ultimately motivating and inspiring budding talents worldwide. We couldn’t help but notice how Eugene Campbell III made his way to the top in the world of basketball in the US, but did he achieve all this overnight?
Well, this passionate being has been one who has seen it all and still ensured to keep walking his path, no matter what. Eugene Campbell III had always wanted to be a professional basketball player since he was a kid, which meant NBA for him, and he came to know about professional leagues in the sport only when he turned 11. He remembers falling in love with basketball when at 7-8 years, his father had put a basketball hoop in their driveway, and as a kid, he kept shooting in the driveway for hours. However, as he grew up, things were not as easy as he wanted them to be as he didn’t get selected for his middle or high school teams. His father was his coach, and while in his 6th and 7th grade, he even played baseball as a pitcher and 3rd baseman. Unfortunately, he was robbed of an opportunity even in this sport of playing in the middle school baseball season. Blame it on his colour or school politics; he never made to any team.
These experiences had Campbell to change five schools, and after entering East Brunswick High School as a Freshman in 2010, he joined the school’s basketball team. Even after trying for the Freshman Boys’ Basketball Team, he was cut, for which he was beyond devastated. But this incident led him to take basketball seriously. He didn’t even have a trainer or coach, but he rigorously worked hard for the game and developed great discipline and a strong work ethic, which led him to the Junior Varsity team, becoming a starter and then 6thman to later becoming a full-time Varsity starter.
The hardest part of his journey is the fact no one recruited him or wanted to coach him. With no opportunities, it was challenging for him to still keep going, but with discipline, he held the focus on his goals and later started getting college offers for recruitment. Even after this, challenges kept coming his way, and he thought his career was coming to an end. In 2020, he graduated from New Jersey City University with a Master’s Degree in Educational Psychology with a 3.7 GPA, but he still dreamed of playing pro basketball and hence, started creating his own opportunity.
Much later, his passion led him to become a professional basketball player and even signed a contract to play basketball professionally in Europe. Today, Eugene Campbell III is also a philanthropist with Walkamilenourshoes, working to inspire change in society and making a difference in the lives of others.
