By June of 2021, about 340 couples were getting married in Las Vegas each day — more than double compared to 2020, and this number might actually triple by the end of 2022. However, when it comes to the reasons behind why Vegas weddings are so popular, you might never realize just how far back the trend dates. From the unique history behind the matter to additional factors that only add to the allure, here’s the story behind the wedding capital of the world.

A brief history of Vegas weddings

Back in the early 1930s, the economy was failing due to the Great Depression in Las Vegas, not to mention the difficulties that regional poverty brought, which was also a problem for the area. That said, Vegas leaders needed something to tax, and in 1931, governor Fred Balzar legalized all forms of casino gambling for the first time in nearly 20 years. The early 1930s also saw the institution of some of the most easygoing marriage policies in the country by none other than Vegas’ Clark County, and the combination of the two new concepts worked to benefit the economy by attracting tourists to the area. With the new marriage policies, those who chose to get married in Vegas could do so quicker than in other places around the country, which had requirements like blood tests.

The benefits of getting married in Vegas

While Vegas’ expedited marriage policies attracted many back in the day, the quick nature of getting married in the city is still a major factor as to why so many still choose to get married there. With the Clark County Marriage License Bureau open seven days a week 8am to midnight, there’s no question that getting married is quite accessible to any couple who wishes to tie the knot on a whim. However, there are additional benefits to getting married in Las Vegas, such as the ability to get married in a memorable way on a budget.

An astounding 40% of couples categorized wedding planning as “extremely stressful,” according to one Zola survey of 500 engaged/newlywed couples. With the cost of a wedding definitely being one factor that many couples might stress over, getting married in Vegas is a great way to have the wedding of your dreams, even when on a budget. In fact, the average cost of a wedding in Las Vegas is between $500 to $600, far below the national average of $20,300. And, with flexibility and customizable ceremonies being additional perks of a Vegas wedding, you can choose to have something small or go all out — or somewhere in between.

The novelty factor

Unsurprisingly, the novelty of Vegas weddings also play a major role as to why they’re so popular. With Elvis and small, picturesque wedding chapels hallmark staples of an impromptu Vegas wedding, the potential for unique venues will also make for an unforgettable day. For instance, couples can choose to get married on the High Roller Observation Wheel for a scenic view of the city throughout the ceremony, or choose to get married in the more modern and elegant setting of the Downtown Grand Hotel and Casino. With other novelty venues including the Titanic Grand Staircase at Luxor, those who choose to get married in Vegas will also enjoy the perks of having entertainment and high quality restaurants nearby, making for additional benefits to any wedding despite the venue location.

Whether you’ve just gotten engaged or you’re in the thick of wedding planning, there are a number of reasons why Vegas should be on your list. From it’s unique history to the many benefits — including a quick and easy marriage process to the novelty factor, there’s no question as to why so many choose to get married there.
