Most engineers who apply for Engineers Australia’s Migration Skills Assessment (MSA) or Stage 1 Assessment find that writing a Competency Demonstration Report (CDR) is achallenging process. Three career episodes must be written and submitted as part of the Competency Demonstration Report (CDR) for engineers who graduated from non-accredited universities and wish to migrate to Australia or work in Australia. Here we interview, Mohamed Nabih, a Technical Writing Expert and Founder of the leading Professional CDR Engineering company, to reveal the top secrets to write a professional competency demonstration report including the 3 career episodes and the summary statement.

What is a Competency Demonstration Report (CDR)?

Engineers Australia requires engineers who hold qualifications from non-accredited institutions to submit a Competency Demonstration Report (CDR) which is a technical report to demonstrate that their knowledge and skills match Australian requirements. The CDR consists of a List of Continuing Professional Development (CPD), Three Career Episodes, and a Summary Statement for the nominated category.

How is the CDR Assessed?

The CDR evaluation is mainly based on the undergraduate qualification and demonstrated graduate competences, thefundamental technical engineering knowledge supporting the nominated occupation, and the demonstrated application of that knowledge in the nominated occupation. So, the graduate competency standards and ANZSCO’s definition of the occupational category selected by the applicant will be compared to the CDR.

What is the Purpose of The Three Career Episodes?

The purpose of the career episodes is to demonstrate to the assessor that an engineer has consolidated and used his or her technical knowledge in a way that confirms engineering abilities and competencies. Consequently, engineers should write and submit three career episodes that describe engineering experiences that, in their opinion, have allowed them to develop, demonstrate and achieve their own skills and competencies.

What Should Be Discussed on The Three Career Episodes?

A career episode is a description of engineer’s education and/or job experience. Each episode of engineering career focuses on a certain time period or area of engineering work. Each episode of engineering career must focus on a distinct time period or area of engineering work. Each episode should highlight how the engineer used engineering knowledge and skilled in the selected occupation. A career episode might be based on any of the following:

• an engineering task undertaken as part of your educational program;
• a project you have worked on or are currently working on;
• a specific position that you occupied or currently occupy (in this case, the career episode must comprise more than a mere duty statement);
• a particular engineering problem that you were required to solve.

What Are the Best Tips to Write Professional Career Episodes?

• Read the Engineers Australia MSA or Stage 1 booklet and understand the competency standard for your selected occupational category before starting to write.
• Select an appropriate project or design exercise to demonstrate a wide range of competencies, but do not attempt to write about each skill aspect separately.
• Follow the required format for career episodes as specified in Engineers Australia booklet, and make sure that each career episode include the four sections: Introduction, Background, Personal Engineering Activity, and Summary.
• Describe work you have really done personally, using the first person singular (I…) to emphasize your own contribution.
• Write between 1000 and 2500 words for each career episode. Do not go above the maximum number of words.
• Each career episode and paragraph should be numberedproperly. For example, in Career Episode 2, paragraph 3 would be referred to as CE2.3, which would help you in constructing your summary statement.
• When writing about a team project, discuss your unique role and skills, how it contributed to the broader goal of the project, what you really performed, and what competence or competencies you believe this indicates.
• Formulas, tables, photos, and drawings cannot replace a succinct description of individual actions and its link to the required competencies.
• Avoid all forms of plagiarism, such as presenting another person’s report or work as your own! Plagiarism is a serious problem for Engineers Australia, as it is a violation of the Code of Ethics.
• Seek an expert’s advice before submitting your CDR to Engineers Australia.

Who is Professional CDR? and How Do You Support Engineers in CDR Assessment?

Professional CDR is a US-registered company specialized in engineering assessments, we support engineers to complete CDR assessment and obtain Professional Engineer recognitionby providing comprehensive advice regarding the required qualifications and experience documents, choosing relevant career episodes projects, following Engineers Australia requirements in writing, and preparing the summary statement. In addition, we provide other engineering assessment services for Australia such as National Engineering Register (NER) and Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng). We have completed hundreds of successful assessment cases since 2017 and we simply believein making Engineers Australia assessment smooth & straight-forward process.
