What If You Can’t Afford a Home Repair?

Owning a home gives you a lot of freedom, but you also have some responsibility. For instance, unlike renting, you can’t just call the landlord when a pipe bursts or you need a new furnace. It is up to you to find and hire a professional to take care of it. And the costs can add up quickly, leaving you wondering how to afford them. Of course, you’ll have to prioritize which repairs require immediate attention, compared to the available funds in your budget.

Try Saving Money on Your Monthly Finances

Of course, the best way to cover a home repair cost is to pay for it yourself. That might not always be possible, so it’s best to start saving money on your monthly finances where possible. If you don’t have one already, create a budget. That way, you can begin saving toward an emergency fund to cover things like unexpected home repairs.

Another way to potentially save money is to refinance your student loans with a private lender. You might be able to get a lower interest rate than when you were in school, allowing you to save money in the process. These private lenders often offer in house servicing, meaning you won’t have to go through a third party during the process.

Getting a Loan

If you have already tried to get a loan in the past and have not succeeded, you might not think getting a new loan is the best idea. Still, you could find nonprofits that work with middleclass or lowerincome people who need funds. While there isn’t an unlimited amount of money, you could get what you need.

Often, these loans are designed for necessary repairs but not renovations. So, if you need a new appliance, such as a freezer, you might not be as likely to get the funds as if you need a new roof. Some of these nonprofits have created lists of housing organizations you can turn to for assistance. If there is a community development financial organization in your town, ask for assistance or advice from them as well. You can find these organizations around the country, even though not everyone qualifies.

For Very Low-Income Families

If you live at the poverty line, you could be eligible for more help. Some organizations repair the homes of those making very little money. It can be harder to find these companies, but you can often come across them if you do your research.

Consider Applying for a Grant

Grants are essentially free money, although it can be challenging to find them. Still, if you can get one, you may find they make home repairs much more affordable. In some areas, you may be able to enter your name into a lottery where the winner receives funds to make home repairs. They are not that common, but they may be worth looking into.

Some people with low income might qualify for grants more often than those that make more. The best way to look for these grants is to look for information online. Or you could ask people in the community who might know about applying for and receiving assistance.
