Fun Yet Safe Ways to Enjoy Your Weekends in California This Winter

After spending the week at home doing work, watching the kids, and completing household chores, you deserve to do something to lift your spirits. You may have decided against any long-distance or international travel amid the pandemic, but that doesn’t mean you have to sit inside watching time pass. For Californians, there’s no shortage of activities you can participate in while prioritizing your health and safety. If you’re not sure what to get into this weekend, perhaps these ideas will inspire you to get out and explore.

Go Camping

The CDC and other health and government agencies believe that outdoor activities are your safest bet during the coronavirus pandemic. So, why not plan a family camping trip? With winter temperatures averaging mid to high 50’s and 60’s in some parts of California, it’s the perfect time to cozy up around a warm campfire. Do some research to determine which campsites are open and what procedures you must follow to prioritize your health and safety. Then, rent an RV, load it with everything you need, and hit the open road for some fun in nature.

Seasonal Community Events

The holiday season is in full effect. Most communities celebrate this joyous time of year by holding seasonal events. As many of these events are held outdoors, it’s another safe way to spend your weekend in California. You’ll often find things like holiday light shows, tree lightings, festivals, and other activities to pique your interests. The best part is that many of these activities are free or cheap to attend. Check your state, county, or local website to find out about upcoming events, and be sure to wear face masks and practice social distancing to safeguard your health.

Stay At A Resort

If there’s one thing that California is known for, it’s the many resorts available for individuals, couples, and families to visit. Despite the pandemic’s rising concerns, these establishments have gone above and beyond to ensure that their guests are safe during their stay. Whether you’re interested in a wellness retreat at a luxury resort on the northside or you’re looking for resorts with casinos in Southern California, you can find the perfect destination to spend some time away from home.

Likely the best part about staying at a resort for the weekend is the spacious and convenient rooms and wealth of activities from gambling and dining to live shows and spa treatments. These activities are hosted on-site, reducing your need to travel and expose yourself to the coronavirus.

Whale Watching

If you’ve never had the opportunity to see a whale up close and personal, the winter is the perfect time to try to spot your own whales. Around Nov-December in California, you can spot several whales as they migrate south. If you’re near Los Angeles, you can book an excursion to Marina Del Ray and San Pedro. You get a guided tour that lasts about an hour or two where experts try to spot whales and even provide you with cool facts about these majestic creatures.

Go Skiing

If the winter’s cold temperatures don’t phase you, skiing is another fun yet safe way to enjoy your weekend in California. From Northstar and Mt. Rose to Kirkwood and Sugar Bowl, there are plenty of popular destinations to ski or snowboard and have a blast. Again, the activity is outdoors. So, as long as you take the proper precautions, you and your family should be just fine. Not to mention you can get in some much-needed exercise, which only boosts your immune system lowering your risk of contracting the virus.

Yes, the current global health crisis makes traveling a lot riskier. However, that doesn’t mean that everyone should remain cooped up and stressed out in the house. Find ways to enjoy your weekends again by planning day trips or weekend getaways and incorporating some of the activities listed above. You and your travel companions can take a break from the daily stresses and simply enjoy the beautiful state you live in.
