Philanthropy and Business Go Hand in Hand, Especially for Entrepreneur Stan Bharti

Born in the Punjab region of India, Stan Bharti is an international businessman and entrepreneur with 30 years of experience in the mining industry. As the founder and executive chairman of Forbes & Manhattan, he has found great success in what he does, and it’s thanks to his vast knowledge of the industry.

Mr. Bharti lived in India until the age of 16, when he received a scholarship to study at the Peoples’ Friendship University in Moscow, Russia. He obtained a degree in engineering before moving to the United Kingdom, where he enrolled in the University of London to get his masters in engineering.

After completing his education, Mr. Bharti moved to Africa to work for a while, before eventually relocating to and settling down in Canada. He got a job as the senior executive of Falconbridge Ltd., a major international mining company, though the company is now known as Glencore. Mr. Bharti kept this position for a few years before moving on to start his own global consulting firm, Bharti Laamanen Mining (BLM) Inc., in 1988.

The company specialized in mine development and turnaround situations, though Mr. Bharti moved on to new ventures in 1995, when he launched Forbes & Manhattan, an international merchant bank and finance house based in Toronto, but with multiple offices around the world, including New York, London, and Los Angeles.

Between each location, Forbes & Manhattan has over 1,000 employees, made up of engineers, geologists, software developers, investment bankers, and financiers. Together, they focus on the development and operation of companies, with over 20 currently being worked on. Their strategy is to grow these companies by seeking out high-potential mining assets, then taking them from exploration and discovery to production, a process that takes three to five years to ensure top-tier results.

On top of his work as an entrepreneur, Mr. Bharti has a passion for charity work and is on several charitable boards in North America and the United Kingdom. In 2010, he set up the Bharti Charitable Foundation, which provides funding to children, wildlife, and natural resources, all in developing countries. And in 2011, he donated $10 million to Laurentian University, located in Sudbury, Canada. The donation went toward field trips, faculty recruitments, building improvements, and even resulted in the university renaming their engineering school to The Bharti School of Engineering.

Mr. Bharti’s charitable work has also landed him the Honorary Consul of Kazakhstan to Canada designation after he created business opportunities in the country of Kazakhstan. For him, giving back to others is as important as working hard for himself. Amassing a fortune is one thing, but sharing it with the community is where the real reward comes in.
