Serena Williams announced her retirement from the Rogers Cup final due to her back injury. She got emotional while leaving the court without completing the game and her opponent Bianca Andreescu comforted her with a hug. The crowd appreciated the fight of Serena Williams against her back pain and also lauded the great display of sportsmanship from Bianca Andreescu.
It was an excellent chance for Serena Williams to win her first tournament after she gave birth to her first child about a couple of years ago. However, the upper-back injury postponed it and she would have to wait further for winning a tournament. The lawn-tennis star was complaining of back spasms before bowing out and the back pain turned too severe to handle for her during the play.
Andreescu, 19, who was leading the game with 3-1 advantage was declared the winner when Serena decided to quit the match. The tennis-star Serena Williams got emotional while addressing the crowd and felt sorry for her inability to continue the game. In her words, the 37-year-old tennis star said, “I’m sorry I couldn’t do it today. I tried, but I couldn’t. Bianca, you’re a great sportswoman. It’s been a tough year but I’m going to keep going.”
After the match, Andreescu added that she didn’t expect to win in this way or for Serena to go off the court. She praised Serena for her competitive spirit in the game and hugged her to comfort her. Andreescu became the first Canadian to win the Rogers Cup since the year 1969.
