Often, people compromise some of life’s greatest assets and go after what they perceive to be a more reasonable path to achieve stability. And while being in one’s safety net ensures security, it does not ultimately foster progression. Thus, to truly ascend towards the peak of victory, one must learn to take risks.
Admittedly, the idea of this kind of valor is easier said than done. While some people take safer routes in their pursuits, others understand the actual value of taking risks. And more often than not, these few courageous individuals have created ripples of positive changes that set the world into motion. One such result of bold collective action is Brandon Mouw.
Brandon Mouw, mostly recognized for his awe-inspiring story of survival, has genuinely seen the undulating and positive effects of taking risks through his battle with Juvenile Type 1 Diabetic. Now, as one of the few survivors of a rare illness, Brandon Mouw aims to encourage everyone to break safety lines and become society’s changemakers across the world by sharing his story of trials and triumphs.
Leading a simple life in an egg ranch in Southern California, Brandon Mouw was only three years old when the doctor diagnosed him with Juvenile Type 1 Diabetic. And on top of this most unfortunate circumstance, Brandon was then found out to be a brittle diabetic, which means that his body is incapable of controlling Diabetes. With these complicated illnesses wrapped into Brandon’s body, the doctors told Brandon that he had no chance of living a long and full life.
Despite these misfortunes, Brandon Mouw wanted to live long and break barriers. So, Brandon tried all sorts of treatment and even kept a diabetic alert dog to keep himself company. But to his dismay, not one treatment was sufficiently suitable to fight Brandon’s rare Diabetes. While some individuals would have given up at this point, Brandon did not lose hope and opted to undergo a novel treatment called the pancreas-only transplant.
Driven to live a better life, Brandon Mouw looked for lucrative ways to have him listed for the lifesaving pancreas only transplant surgery. However, various insurance companies turned a blind eye on Brandon’s case because it’s an optional coverage in the Affordable Care Act, rarely done, and there was little to no chance of survival. Determined to prove them wrong, Brandon took the risk and sought help from like-minded individuals. Through a collective effort, Brandon was able to raise $250,000 and undergo treatment.
Now, Brandon Mouw is a Type 1 Diabetes survivor who aims to inspire others by sharing to the world how he overcame one of the most challenging moments of his life. Driven by his will to live, Brandon embarks on opening a new chapter in his life through engaging in the motivational speaking and writing inspirational books.
Although there is nothing wrong with confining oneself on safer grounds, one must understand that progress requires breaking barriers that limit a person to grow. While it may be a scary path to take for others, Brandon Mouw serves as a genuine attestation of how far taking risks can lead a person’s life towards greener pastures. Through his story, he hopes to encourage others to follow suit.
