If there is one thing that most families would like to continue to enjoy despite the pandemic, it is most likely being outdoors and spending quality time with loved ones without fear of being exposed. Moonlite Theaters Drive-In in Charleston, South Carolina, is letting families enjoy their quality time together by watching a movie outside of their homes while they are safe inside their vehicles. Aside from movie showing, delicious food, live acoustic bands, and other musicians are also featured to entertain. “Our goal at Moonlite Theaters is to make each night an experience for our guests,” says Norma Boccabella, social media and special events director. “We are also proud to offer our venue for hosting ‘social distance’ events to the public. Moonlite Theaters’ vision is to host an outdoor entertainment venue that stretches well beyond the expectations of traditional theaters.”
The brains behind Moonlite Theaters Drive-In envisioned providing alternative entertainment for families outside of their homes where they can remain secure while enjoying a change of atmosphere. Co-founders Todd Boccabella, Terrell Braly, Wil Riggs, and Dan Bradley specifically chose a location that is both accessible and very visible to ensure the safety of the moviegoers. The drive-in theater gives them a reason to get out of the house without having to compromise their health and safety.
“Our concept is a start-up for this area. But as far as what we’re doing, we’re the grandfathers of this industry from an outdoor entertainment destination experience standpoint,” explains co-founder, Terrell Braly. “Our coolest events have been outdoors. That’s part of the reason why we’re excited about this location,” he adds.
“This is a proven concept. And from a location standpoint, it can’t get any better,” Todd Boccabella explains. “The setting is absolutely top-notch under any circumstances, but particularly now with social distancing and people still wanting that community experience of entertainment.”
Co-founder Terrell Braly ignited the idea behind this remarkable concept. Back in the 1980s, he was very active in promoting concerts to include that of the Beach Boys and The Eagles. After some time, Braly ventured in theaters and eventually expanded into a five-screen setup that evolved into a successful franchise. In 2005, Entertainment Weekly labeled it “one of America’s most fanatically unique moviegoing experiences.” Moreover, Braly’s Alamo Drafthouse theater business ranked as one of the 10 Theaters Doing It Right. After some time, Braly sold his business and moved on to establish Cinnebarre, a cinema and eatery which he is famous for after introducing it to Mount Pleasant.
One of Braly’s most notable projects was hosting the showing of Jaws on Lake Austin in Texas. He let the audience float around on inner tubes while watching the floating screen. Unknown to the viewers, divers were stationed underwater, just waiting for the right moment to surprise them as an added thrill to the experience. Braly also sealed a deal to show the world premiere of the film Freddy vs. Jason horror flick in 2003. The premiere was set on a camping ground that they renamed Camp Hack ‘n’ Slash. Both the director and the producer of the film attended the premiere together with members of the Entertainment Tonight television show.
Prior to co-developing Moonlite Theaters Drive-In, Braly was also well-known for his unique setting for the premiere of the Texas Chainsaw massacre. The well-attended premiere was set up in a vacant mental hospital. Actress Jessica Biel was also in attendance.
The main investor Todd Boccabella, on the other hand, is the numbers guy who keeps the creativity organized. He has a finance background with experience in the entertainment industry. His wife, Norma, produced and hosted a Spanish talk show in the Dominican Republic in the ’90s.
