Fumi Ogensemore grew up caring for her elderly grandmother. This experience had a profound effect on her life and influenced her career path in healthcare. When she began nursing in 2011, she had no idea that it would one day lead her to become the CEO of her own company.
What Ogunsemore saw in her nursing career changed her trajectory. Nursing care in the home was financially too far out of reach for many people who needed it, even as nursing home costs continued to rise. In addition, many of the patients she served required far more help than they or their families could handle. Ogensemore was touched by the plight of these patients and the loved ones who cared for them.
Sharing Her Blessings
Ogensemore wasn’t raised to ignore the needs of her community. She found it too difficult to look the other way when she saw the suffering some of her most vulnerable patients had to endure. She said her grandmother would always preach, “If you have a loaf of bread and you see someone who doesn’t have anything, you need to share with them.”
Those words were more than an adage for Ogensemore; they were words she carried in her heart. This long-held sentiment spurred her to make a change to better her community by starting an affordable home care company. Her business, Valley of Joy Home Care, now offers services to those that otherwise could not afford it by using government-funded programs for the disabled, aging, and developmentally disabled.
Her mission in setting up the business was to ensure those that needed ongoing care, but didn’t want to live in a nursing home, had the option to live at home. In her belief, money should not be a barrier to receiving top-quality care services.
Adapting to the Changing Needs of Her Community
Ogensemore’s Valley of Joy Nursing has now been operating for more than five years, but she is excited about her newest endeavor, Valley of Joy Medical Staffing. She feels her work lies not only in working with patients but in helping her fellow nurses who work so hard to give care to those in need. The impetus to set this goal in motion came in 2020.
Taking care of your community means stepping up in a crisis to provide relief. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Ogensemore watched her beloved healthcare community struggling to care for patients without proper PPE. At the same time, her fellow nurses worked through severe staffing shortages.
As a nurse, she knew too well the impact of such sparse staffing availability. With the situation growing out of control, Ogensemore worried that the direct patient care staff was spread too thin, and the patients would suffer. She also felt great concern for her overworked peers, who sacrificed so much to be on the front lines every day. In response to the ongoing predicament, she founded, Valley of Joy Medical Care Staffing.
Through her efforts, she managed to match nurses to the hospitals that needed them. Her endeavors made a significant contribution to aiding healthcare organizations to meet the staffing criteria they needed while also assisting her fellow nurses with job placements. With her help, over 5000 nurses have been staffed in various organizations throughout the country.
Living the Dream
Ogunsemore keeps her nursing license current and continues to work in the field. She is always ready to jump in and help when local facilities are facing staffing shortages and need an extra nurse. Keeping her hands in the work gives her a direct line to the needs of patients, her fellow nurses, and healthcare organizations alike.
Ogensmore loves helping her peers find fulfilling work opportunities and live their dreams. As such, Valley of Joy Medical Care Staffing is committed to placing them in their dream jobs, no matter what it takes. Unlike other staffing agencies, Ogunsemore helps them locate all the resources they need to begin a new position. In some cases, when nurses are moving to a new location, it might mean securing housing. In other cases, it may mean locating training resources.
“There’s an abundance of opportunities that not everyone may know about. It’s my responsibility to access the information and people that I know and connect those in need with people who are ready to seize new opportunities,” said Ogunsemore. “That’s my gift, and I’m glad for the ability to use it.”
