The Evolution of Motion Interface Design in Computers and Smartphones

Motion interface design has become a fundamental component of contemporary digital product design. It connects interaction design and visual interface design by visually communicating system behavior, computational processes, and user feedback. Although motion effects are implemented through programming, effective motion interface design requires careful consideration of timing, visual transitions, color change, and device constraints. In many contexts, motion interfaces incorporate techniques derived from motion graphics and animation, particularly in digital media, science fiction films, and technology advertising. However, motion interface design is often broadly categorized as motion graphic design. While the two share visual similarities, motion interface design differs in its primary purpose: rather than storytelling or visual expression, it focuses on communicating system states and supporting user interaction.

The visual representation of motion has a long historical background. Motion graphics developed as a distinct discipline within visual communication alongside cinema and animation, as all three rely on moving images as their primary medium. Krasner (2008) explains that motion graphics emerged in the twentieth century as experimental filmmakers and designers explored new visual forms. Animated film titles produced in the 1950s established motion graphics as a recognizable design practice and influenced the development of digital visual communication.

The concept of depicting motion visually, however, predates modern media technologies. Thomas (1958) observed that prehistoric cave paintings often depicted animals with multiple overlapping legs, an early attempt to represent movement within static images. Although primitive, these examples demonstrate that visualizing motion has long been part of human artistic expression.

During the twentieth century, motion graphics became widely used in film, television, and branding. Television networks, in particular, adopted motion graphics to create distinctive visual identities. Designers animated broadcast logos and title sequences to produce memorable brand imagery. In the 1950s, John Whitney Sr. pioneered the use of technical animation in television graphics and advertising. Later, Harry Marks of ABC introduced the concept of animated broadcast logos and collaborated with Douglas Trumbull, a visual effects pioneer known for his work on 2001: A Space Odyssey. Trumbull developed the slit-scan camera technique, which generated dynamic visual effects by scanning illuminated artwork through a narrow slit while moving the camera along a track (Krasner, 2008). Although this method was technically complex and expensive, it expanded the possibilities of motion-based visual design.

While motion graphics emphasized visual communication and artistic expression, motion interface design emerged from developments in computing and human–computer interaction. One of the earliest examples of motion-based visualization appeared in the 1950s with the oscilloscope, which displayed electrical signals as moving waveforms on a screen. Engineers and scientists used these visualizations to observe real-time signal behavior, demonstrating how motion could effectively communicate technical information.

Another milestone occurred in 1961 with the development of Sketchpad at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Sketchpad allowed users to draw directly on a computer display using a light pen. Users could create shapes, modify lines, and adjust geometric structures interactively. When the user tapped the screen, the system dynamically changed the position or direction of the lines. This immediate visual feedback demonstrated an early form of interactive motion interface in which system responses were communicated through animated visual changes.

The Xerox Alto computer, developed in 1973, further advanced motion-based interfaces by introducing a graphical user interface built around windows, icons, and a mouse (Hiltzik, 1999). Within this system, motion became an essential mechanism for communicating user interaction. For example, the blinking cursor indicated where text would appear and confirmed that the system had received user input. Similarly, interface elements responded to mouse actions by changing color or moving with the cursor during drawing operations. These dynamic responses helped users understand system behavior and represented a major step toward modern graphical user interfaces.

Despite these early innovations, the evolution of motion interface design between 1973 and 1985 remains relatively undocumented. During this period, computing development focused primarily on improving hardware capabilities and expanding access to personal computers. As Grudin (2017) notes, high display costs and expensive printing technologies limited early adoption of personal computers, which slowed the development of more sophisticated graphical interfaces.

From the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s, graphical user interfaces began to evolve more rapidly as personal computing became more widely adopted. Visual interface design increasingly emphasized usability and accessibility for non-technical users. Colorful graphical elements and intuitive layouts made computing systems easier to understand and operate. At the same time, the field of human–computer interaction expanded, bringing together researchers from computer graphics, software engineering, and artificial intelligence (Grudin, 2017).

Apple played a major role in establishing interface design standards during this period. After Steve Jobs left the company in the 1980s, Larry Tesler led a group at Apple that focused on user studies and interface design. Their work refined graphical interface concepts originally developed at Xerox PARC. The publication of the Apple Human Interface Guidelines in 1987 provided developers with a unified framework for interface design and helped standardize graphical interaction patterns across software systems.

Smartphone interfaces emerged later than personal computer interfaces. The first smartphone, IBM Simon, was introduced in 1993 and featured a relatively simple interface based on a monochrome display and window-based interaction. Motion elements were minimal, though animated icons such as the rotating hourglass were used to indicate that the system was processing commands.

From 1995 to 2005, the rapid growth of the internet transformed computers and mobile phones into everyday communication tools. Motion elements during this period remained relatively simple but gradually introduced users to animated feedback within digital interfaces.

After 2010, motion interface design became increasingly important in digital product development. Several factors contributed to this shift. First, users began to expect more visually engaging and aesthetically refined interfaces. Second, user experience design matured as a discipline, providing systematic frameworks for interaction design. Cooper et al. (2014) described principles and processes that encouraged closer collaboration between designers and engineers in building interactive systems. Third, competition within the technology industry encouraged companies to differentiate their products through interface design innovation.

A significant shift occurred in 2013 when Apple redesigned the iPhone interface, transitioning from skeuomorphic design to flat design. Because flat interfaces reduced visual texture and depth, motion became an important tool for conveying hierarchy and system feedback. The redesign of Siri illustrates this transformation. In iOS 6, a glowing microphone icon indicated voice input. In iOS 7, this visual representation was replaced by dynamic, colorful sound waves that responded to the user’s speech. Rather than imitating physical objects, the interface used motion to visualize interaction. Although waveform displays existed in earlier signal technologies, motion interface design reintroduced them as expressive interactive elements within modern digital systems.

The development of motion interface design reflects the broader evolution of human–computer interaction. As computing technologies advanced, motion increasingly served as a tool for communicating system processes, guiding user attention, and improving usability. Today, motion interfaces play a crucial role in shaping how users perceive and interact with digital products.
