Common Injuries Resulting from Car Accidents

Car accident injuries can vary dramatically depending on the type of accident. The speed of the vehicles, the direction they were each heading, the types of vehicles, and other factors could result in injuries that range from mild to severe.

In most car crashes, these are the most common injuries that victims sustain.

Whiplash

Due to the sudden stop in a crash, the head goes forward and backward, resulting in whiplash. It may lead to damage to the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and discs in your neck. Neck stiffness or soreness is common, as is difficulty turning your head. You may feel dizzy, fatigued, or have headaches. Sometimes, injury victims with whiplash may not realize something is wrong for a full day.

Traumatic Brain Injuries

A traumatic brain injury (TBI) can be minor or severe, depending on the point and force of impact. You may experience memory loss and concentration problems. A TBI can also cause speech and perception impairments. Behavioral issues such as mood swings, increased irritability, or anxiety are also common.

If you sustain a traumatic brain injury, you may begin getting headaches, feel nauseous, and have trouble with balance or coordination. Injuries like these tend to happen in more catastrophic accidents such as head-on collisions, vehicle rollovers, or any accident involving a commercial truck. Sometimes, the effects of a TBI can be permanent.

Back and Spinal Cord Injuries

In a car crash, it is easy to strain or sprain your back. Injuries like those will usually heal in time, though you may wind up with herniated discs or injuries to your spinal cord. This all depends on where the injury occurred and its severity. You may suffer from back pain, weakness or a tingling sensation in your legs, limited mobility, or loss of control of your bladder or bowels. In serious accidents, you may wind up losing your mobility completely.

Broken Bones

Broken bones can cause incredible pain, and depending on the type of fraction and location on your body, it may take a long time for you to heal. You may notice you can’t move your foot, leg, hand, arm, or feel severe pain in your ribs. Bruising is common on the skin above the fracture point. While many broken bones can heal, some serious injuries may leave you suffering with chronic pain, mobility issues, or nerve damage.

Psychological Aspects of a Car Crash

In addition to your physical injuries, you may experience long-lasting psychological trauma. Those who are seriously injured or left with permanent damage most often experience loss for what they once loved doing and may be anxious, depressed, or experience post-traumatic stress disorder.

However, even if you escaped without a scratch from a terrifying car accident, the psychological effects could change the way you live your life. You may be afraid of driving, have nightmares, insomnia, and other troubles that impact you even years later.
