Winter is almost over, and spring and the sun are peering in through the door. Not long after that, summer is going to barge through, bringing heat, thirst, and in some countries even potential danger. Of course, summer is awesome and fun outside, but very few people want to come home and be subjected to the same heat and perhaps discomfort they just tried to escape from, so why don’t we give you a few tips and pointers on how you can keep your abode cool and comfortable all summer long?

Block the Sun Out

Duh, right? Well, yes, but you would be surprised at how many people love to let all the light in, and have the sun streaming in through the window. If you want to keep your home cool all summer, then resist the temptation and try to keep blinds and curtains closed during the day. Of course, you should also prepare your AC unit in anticipation of the coming heat, but if you live somewhere where it gets very hot, then you certainly want to try and also block the sun out. Every bit helps.

Open Windows and/or Doors in the Morning and Night

As previously stated, you want to keep everything well and closed during the middle and hottest part of the day, so it is best to open doors and windows first thing in the morning and late afternoon, or basically when the hottest part of the day has passed. The trick here is to keep air moving through your home, as moving air is cooler than still air, which is why breezes are almost universally considered positive, which is pretty much exactly what we are going for here, getting a breeze to move through your home. To do this, make sure you have windows and/or doors open at opposite ends of your home, which will create a draft and allow air to move freely around.

Get Some House Plants

House plants have been experiencing a bit of a revival recently, and they provide a multitude of services, so to speak. Not only do they add color, flavor, and style to our homes, as well as make our spaces happier, having been proven to boost your mood, but plants can also help keep your house nice and cool. Plants act as natural air conditioners, generating moisture into the atmosphere through a process known as transpiration. The most heat-efficient plants you can get are peace lilies and rubber plants as they work best in more humid conditions. So having a few plants around will keep your house cool in summer, naturally, without any complications, batteries, or whatever else. Just remember to water them, especially as the temperature creeps up outside.

There are many more little tips and tricks you can do to help keep everything cool, but these are the most accessible and easiest you can pretty much do and get without any major barriers regardless of where you live. Utilize them to your advantage, and your summer self will thank you for your foresight and preparation.
