Your home landscape is probably the first thing people will notice when they walk into your home. This only stresses the need to do maintenance regularly. A well done landscape is a work of art that needs care. Things like the lawn, trees and shrubs can overwhelm you if let to overgrow or undone for long periods of time.

In some places you might get into trouble with code enforcement agencies if your yard is out of control. Maintaining your landscape is also a way to protect your investment on the property.

Here are a few ways you can maintain your landscape.

Weeding Regularly

Weeds can become a huge problem if not addressed regularly. A weed is a plant that grows where it’s not wanted and due to the risk that it might multiply rapidly, should be removed. Having all weeds pulled out as soon as they start growing helps to prevent them from going out of control.

Weeds take up nutrients meant for your plants.

In the spirit of caring for the environment, have the weeds in your landscape pulled out physically. Try to avoid using chemicals to control weeds in your yard as this can be harmful to you and the environment.

Mulching

Mulching is placing dry vegetative material around plants or trees to cover the soil around them. This practice helps to reduce soil erosion, suppress weed growth, prevent water evaporation, retain moisture, and provide plant nutrients after decomposing.

Examples of dry vegetative material you could use includes plant residue, straw, sawdust, leaves, and green manure crops. Other materials like plastic planes and stones can also be used as mulch. Mulching will keep the plants in your landscape healthy and clean. Avoid using wet or green plants as mulch. Go for dry plant material that does not rot quickly.

Automate Your Irrigation

While watering your plants by yourself will work to maintain your landscape, it can be a time consuming activity. You risk not being able to keep up with the required schedule. However, automating your sprinklers and irrigation system can go a long way in keeping your landscape well hydrated.

Moreover, automation means you’ll be in the best position to follow through a schedule pretty easily. With an automatic system you can set it to suit your plants’ winter, summer, spring and fall water needs without risking their health.

Trimming and Pruning

Trees, shrubs and vines in your landscape need pruning and trimming from time to time. Unmaintained plants can become quite messy and ugly. Shrubs and vines require softening on the edges.

The best time to prune trees is during the spring when they start showing growth and flowering. Pruning involves cutting off dead branches and getting rid of suckers. You should prune your trees after they finish flowering. Some trees get to this stage in the spring while others do so in the summer. Maintaining the trees also involves raking fallen leaves during the fall season.

Total Grounds Management, Inc. is the best choice when it comes to professional landscape installations. They install retaining walls, top soils, turf, ground cover, plants and provide the best irrigation systems for your landscaping In and around the Tacoma Washington area.
