In most movies and TV series that we have watched, students rely on their parents for their school allowance. Some are even working part-time to support their education. While these scenarios are not far from reality, many students struggle to budget the money that they have. These situations get worse when they start to leave their parent’s homes or availed of a student loan.

Instead of focusing on the depressing truth about money, take this as a challenge to start taking the path to financial stability. If you are a student and clueless about how to start, here are some of the tips that you can save more money.

1. Dedicate a fixed amount to save.

Whenever you earn money from a part-time job or when your parents have handed you an allowance, make sure to save a part of it. This will help you to have money to use when you need it the most, like during emergency cases or being in an unexpected situation. It would be preferable to put them in the bank so they will not be easily accessible.

2. Choose second-hand books.

Whenever there is a need to buy a book, always check first from send-hand bookstores. Just make sure that the books are revised not so long ago. These books have basically the same information but have a reduced price of up to 70% off. You may also check if there is a PDF version that you can read on your tablet, which is sometimes offered for free on the internet.

3. Take advantage of discounts.

Some stores and restaurants give special discounts for students. Maximize the use of these discounts and see how much money you can save. Aside from this, switching to buying online is a great option for students. They are usually cheaper and more convenient than buying in retail stores. In addition, there are promotional codes available on websites like GreenPromoCode.com. It provides a list of discount codes that enable users to deduct some amount on the subtotal. Save money with the use of these coupon codes.

4. Get in the habit of making your own food and drinks.

Many students lounge in coffee shops where they can find peace while studying. Entering these shops requires them to purchase a coffee that costs more than the homemade one. Imagine buying a cup of coffee for $10, when a bag of coffee beans costs around $8 that is good for up to 30 days. Another way to save money is by cooking your own meals. Aside from being healthier, it also helps improve cooking skills and an opportunity to explore cuisines from all over the world!

5. Share costs with flatmates.

If you are living in a dorm or sharing with another student, arrange a fixed share of basic necessities. To help make it fair, there are now money-splitting apps that are available to download to smartphones and tablets. This avoids the awkwardness of asking money to buy for necessities that the both of you utilize. Some may say that it just involves a small amount, but it can be a significant amount when collected.
