Rapping is as diverse a genre as any other forms of music, and the rap game is being made even stronger with the emergence of some incredibly talented dark horses on the scene like the LA-based SpiffyUNO. Hip-hop is not merely a headbanger party anthem that helps you groove in on the disco floor, but the songs are powerful expressions of the struggles of the artists, of their rags-to-riches tales and their messages to the world. SpiffyUNO is the latest addition to this group of emcees who churn out stellar music and hard-hitting lyrics to mesmerise and inspire today’s youth.
Hailing from a family of devout Christians based in South Central Los Angeles, Spiffy has had a troubled childhood and was influenced by the street gangs of Crips and Bloods. His early teens were spent trying to figure out his dream career in music, as he channelised his emotions into the book of poetry he prepared. His journals are a testimony to his evolution as rapper-from poetry to narrating tales with rap. The bleak, dreary streets of Los Angeles thus gave birth to a new hip-hop talent, once again. In fact, Spiffy’s name is actually a tribute to his roots- Spiffy designating his dressing style as a childhood sartorial preference, and UNO reveals his path-breaking journey, the unorthodox lane he has carved out for himself.
Spiffy’s claim to fame can be attributed to his first album release, “South Central”- strongly reminiscent of his childhood town, and featured some bigshots of rap music like Bad Lucc and Dem Jointz. His popularity was cemented by his highly-acclaimed Freestyle Friday programme, where his singles “MARVELous” and “Spiffy for President” became chartbusters, gaining him the recognition he long deserved. He is one of those very few artists who have been signed on for their major labels by Bangloose. This much-awaited big collaboration is scheduled to release under the Builders International label in 2021.
When asked about the secret behind his success, Spiffy revealed the originality and dedication that he puts in each of his songs. He is so invested in generating his niche music, examples being “The Games People Play”, “Family Hustle” and “Black Ink Crew” that he does not get lost in the glitz of showbiz. With his feet firmly placed on the ground, SpiffyUNO is set to achieve and break multiple music records.
