Teresa Barney sued Legal Aid of Oregon over claims that the organization had a part in her bouts with mental illness. The claim stated that Barney had been exposed to toxicity produced by a space heater in the Stevens Building. A few months later, she was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Panic Disorder, and Depression. She also stated it resulted in her being on six prescriptions. Barney states she had to use the heater because the property managers failed to fix the building’s heating systems after she had requested several times. The diagnosis would cost Barney over $50,000 in treatment and accrue another $50,000.
The complaint alleges negligence and employment discrimination, and Barney demanded over $1 million in medical damages compensation and another $3 million in non-medical damages. She was awarded nothing.
