A group of 20 Malleswaram women is utilizing old blouses, curtains, and bedsheets to make cloth bags in order to promote their use as a replacement for plastic bags. The initiative has been taken to eradicate the use of plastic bags in order to preserve the environment. ‘Bags in, Plastic Out’ initiative was started a couple of months ago by a Malleshwaram-based Social group in order to make cloth bags using their sewing machines and over 600 bags have been distributed to vendors, shopkeepers, and residents to persuade them to use the cloth bags.
The availability of many online services related to sewing and embroidery machines manufacturing units has played a crucial role in increasing the use of such machines in stitching clothes and bags. Malleswaram based women group has been asking neighboring people to donate their old clothes so that it could make cloth bags by making use of sewing machines. People are donating sewing machines to needy women so as to accelerate the process of making cloth bags.
After making cloth bags, the group is distributing them to various people to spread awareness about the use of cloth bags in place of plastic bags. The group is distributing the cloth bags to the government schools across Maleshwaram to spread the knowledge about the advantages of using cloth bags. People have been appreciating the use of sewing machines to save the environment and declaring it a brave move to protect the environment.
The social group just take 15-20 minutes to make a cloth bag using their sewing machines. And it is appealing for people to donate their old clothes in order to provide more cloth bags to eradicate the use of plastic bags.
