One of these top engineers is Varun Shah. He has agreed to sit down for an interview delving into his remarkable journey, from growing up in a quiet neighborhood in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India, to his current role as a leading software engineer at one of the world’s largest tech companies, Amazon. Varun shares his experiences, challenges, and the lessons he has learned along the way.
Question: Can you take us back to your early days in Ahmedabad? How did your passion for technology emerge?
Varun Shah: Growing up in Ahmedabad, I was surrounded by a close-knit community that valued hard work and education. Although no one in my family was from a technical background, I was always fascinated by computers and technology. In elementary school, I had my first exposure to programming languages like Basic, Logo, and Pascal, which ignited my passion for technology. I found joy in solving problems and creating things using code, and that’s when I knew I wanted to pursue a career in the tech industry.
Q: How did your education and experiences shape your journey in software engineering?
Shah: After completing my schooling, I enrolled in L.D Engineering College in Ahmedabad to study engineering. The rigorous curriculum and dedicated faculty played a crucial role in shaping my technical skills and providing a strong foundation in software engineering. Additionally, I actively sought opportunities to enhance my knowledge through internships and projects, which allowed me to gain practical experience in real-world scenarios. These experiences, coupled with my dedication to continuous learning, helped me develop a deep understanding of software development principles and best practices.
Q: Can you walk us through the pivotal moments that led you to your role at Amazon?
Shah: After completing my engineering degree, I joined Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) as a software engineer. This was a significant milestone in my career, as it provided me with exposure to working on large-scale projects and collaborating with diverse teams. It was during my time at TCS that I realized the importance of continuous growth and expanding my skill set.
I subsequently joined Cignex Technology, where I had the opportunity to work on projects for renowned clients like Posadas hotel groups, Sesame Street, and Toyota. This experience deepened my expertise in technical leadership and project management. It was a turning point in my career when I was recruited by Sony PlayStation, the world’s biggest video game company, as an engineering lead. This role challenged me to redesign the payment gateway services, leading to significant improvements in scalability and availability.
The success I achieved at Sony PlayStation opened doors for me to join ServiceNow, where I served as an engineering leader and contributed to the development of the ServiceNow Vault product. Finally, my journey brought me to Amazon, where I am currently leading software engineering teams to build life-safety applications.
Q: What have been some of the key challenges you faced during your career journey?
Shah: Transitioning between industries has presented its fair share of challenges. Each new role required me to adapt to different technologies, processes, and work environments. Additionally, as a software engineer, keeping up with the rapid pace of technological advancements and industry trends is a constant challenge. However, I believe that challenges are opportunities for growth, and they have pushed me to continuously expand my knowledge and skill set.
Q: Tell us about your coaching and mentoring initiatives.
Shah: I am actively providing volunteer coaching/mentoring on CoffeeMug, AdpList, PlatoHQ, MentorCruise, and TopMate. I believe that mentoring and coaching is vital because it empowers individuals to unlock their full potential by learning from the experiences and wisdom of others. Through guidance, support, and personalized insights, coaching and mentoring can accelerate personal and professional growth, helping younger and upcoming professionals navigate challenges and achieve their goals with confidence and clarity.
Q: What drives your passion for software engineering, and what motivates you to excel in your role at Amazon?
Shah: Software engineering is a constantly evolving field, and that excites me. The ability to create innovative solutions that have a real impact on people’s lives is incredibly rewarding. At Amazon, I am motivated by the opportunity to work on life-safety applications that help ensure the well-being of Amazon employees and facilities during critical incidents. Knowing that my work contributes to the safety and security of millions of individuals worldwide keeps me motivated to excel and push the boundaries of what is possible.
