Your parents supported, advised, disciplined and cared for you while growing up. From little things to the biggest joys your parents got you everything. They have been your source of guidance while you are their source of joy.

As they grow old you might be feeling low and struggling to get into the unfamiliar role of becoming a caregiver to them. The tables have turned and now you see yourself in their position. It can be challenging to accept this fact and settle into it. Here are some ways you can cope up with the new life situation.

Accept it is NOT easy and you are NOT a natural

Half of the time people keep themselves in guilt and regret and are not able to do as much as they are capable of under the burden. The roles have changed. Now you are the parent and you need to accept it. Even if they haven’t passed away, you need to understand the changes have happened rapidly and you are in a new position. Allow your emotions to flow.

It is OKAY to feel sad, angry, and cry as the relationship changes. You are allowed to mourn the loss of the previous and more comfortable relationship you had with your parents when they were the caregivers.

Respect is important

While you adjust to the new changing relationship with your parents, take their emotion in consideration and don’t get frustrated. Bonus is, you can even look for ways on how to get paid to be a caregiver for parents. Remember the whole thing is new for them too and even when they are being stubborn they are also feeling embarrassed for requiring the assistance from their children for simple tasks.

It is stressful in different ways for both parties. Handle situations clearly and calmly to make sure there are no hurt feelings and the relationship isn’t harmed.
