We had the opportunity to sit down with Sunil Wadhwani, of McAllen, Texas. Wadhwani is the seasoned entrepreneur and CEO behind a flourishing hospitality business. We delved into the journey of how he transformed a small retail venture into a hotel empire spanning multiple brands.
Mr. Wadhwani, could you share how you embarked on your entrepreneurial journey?
After working alongside my parents in their retail/wholesale store in Brownsville, I opened my own location in McAllen at the age of 25, focusing on Electronics and Branded Watches. Over the years, I diversified into online retail, and real estate, and eventually entered the Hospitality industry.
What motivated you to step into the business world?
Entrepreneurship was a long-standing aspiration of mine. The opportunity to work with La Quinta arose, and in 2000, I became one of their first new franchisees, marking a pivotal moment in my career.
Reflecting on your journey, what notable successes stand out for you?
I started with a modest 65-room hotel, and now our portfolio now boasts eight locations with a ninth on the horizon, totaling nearly 1,000 rooms across La Quinta/Wyndham, Motel 6, and Marriott brands.
How did your background shape your path to entrepreneurship?
Moving from Asia to Dallas at the age of 6, I was never drawn to academics but was passionate about sports. After school, I followed my instincts, and one thing led to another. Sports taught me so much and carried over to my career in business.
As the CEO, what does a typical day look like for you?
I do daily visits to each location. I have key discussions with my general managers to address issues, and I do a thorough review of finances with my management team. These types of activities define my routine.
Can you share some of your proudest moments in your career?
Personally, my 35-year marriage and my children and grandchildren bring me immense pride. Professionally, being recognized as Franchise of the Year for La Quinta and Motel 6, multiple times, and joining the prestigious Marriott family are standout moments.
What are some significant challenges you’ve faced as the CEO?
Initially, the dependency on cross-border traffic and Mexican travelers posed challenges. Subsequently, coping with overbuilding and market saturation, and navigating the complexities of the COVID pandemic were significant hurdles.
How would you describe your management style?
I am highly hands-on. While I have a daily presence at properties, my general managers are empowered to handle day-to-day operations with their teams. I am always available to offer insight and guidance but I feel strongly about providing empowerment as a leader.
What do you consider your top priorities as CEO?
I feel it is meeting obligations to lenders, training and focusing on the management team, preparing for the future, and maintaining top-notch properties for guest satisfaction.
What is your vision for your business?
I am aiming for 1,000 rooms across all our brands and establishing an excellent management team to afford me a less involved role in the later years of my life.
Could you share some notable failures you’ve overcome in your career?
There was a housing development project during the housing market collapse. And there was a significant setback with my internet watch retail business due to competition from Amazon. I would define those as the most challenging times in my career.
What inspires you to excel in your career?
It would have to be my parents’ journey from $100 to achieving the American Dream that inspires me. My family is always an inspiration. Also, witnessing their success, and the desire to assist others in succeeding are powerful motivators.
Any advice for those entering the field?
Listen, learn, accumulate experience, and start from the bottom up. Hard work and gaining hands-on experience are key. That would be the advice I would give someone to succeed, not only in business but in life.
Do you have any go-to sources for inspiration or knowledge?
I do not. I believe in the value of hard work and its rewards.
We would like to thank Sunil Wadhwani of McAllen, Texas for providing insights into the challenges and triumphs that shaped his entrepreneurial journey. He has showcased a relentless commitment to family, hard work, and a vision for continued success.
