With women empowerment on the rise, mothers are breaking free from the crippling notion that women should stay at home and limit themselves to doing housework. And while there is absolutely nothing wrong with being a stay-at-home mother, society does not get to decide the type of woman one chooses to be.
Lisa Collum, an entrepreneurial icon, takes down any stigma surrounding mothers from all over the world and puts the power back into their own hands.
To the world, Lisa Collum is known for being a successful CEO, a published author, and a respected educator. But to her four amazing children, she is a loving mother trying her best to keep the household together. On top of it all, she is also the owner of two well-reputed educational companies – Top Score Writing, Inc., and Coastal Middle and High School.
Before turning into the multifaceted gem that she is today, Lisa was just a kid pretending to hold classes in front of her stuffed animals every Saturday morning. And little did she know that this childhood pastime would soon be the foundation on which her lifelong passion will stand. As young as she was back then, she already knew what she wanted to be.
Eager to turn her dream into a reality, Lisa grew up never losing sight of her vision and mission. So right after graduating from college, she took off and landed her first job as a fourth grade writing teacher in one of the lowest-performing schools in Palm Beach Country. And although it was a dream come true for her, she was disappointed with how there was no specific writing curriculum available for her classes.
The lack of resources worried Lisa because the state writing test was just around the corner, and she wanted nothing more than for her students to pass. She started visiting local educational stores and searching the world wide web for teaching materials; however, it was all to no avail. She could have easily given up at that point, but she did not let it dampen her spirits. Her heart was still in the right place, and she believed she could create ripples of change in the system.
Undaunted, Lisa studied the common areas that students struggled in and developed her own ways of teaching writing. In less than a year, Lisa was able to turn her class around from nearly all failing to achieve a 100% passing rate. She then applied the same method in each class and got the same results every time, regardless of how many students had struggled in the past. After teaching in the classroom for seven years, Lisa created a small one-inch binder of about 25 writing lessons. The entire process was a tough one, but her husband and children helped her along the way. And for over a year, the family-led assembly line continued until it piqued the interest of a superintendent from another country.
Impressed by the well-curated program, this superintendent wasted no time buying the curriculum for her entire district and even had Lisa go over to train about three hundred teachers therein. This marvelous feat breathed life into Top Score Writing, Inc. The company specializes in writing curriculum and is the only program specifically designed to prepare students for the state writing assessment.
Years later, the Top Score Writing curriculum is already being used in thousands of schools in five different states. Lisa also takes pride in not letting the sense of gaining profit become the company’s prime motive for its operations. On the contrary, the CEO shares that the reason why the company is such a huge success is that it is rooted in the advocacy of ensuring that children get the most out of their learning experience.
