After experiencing a major shutdown in mid-March due to COVID-19, Nevada casinos and other land-based casinos across the U.S. are starting to reopen. While each state and casino has its own set of guidelines, here’s what the new “norm” for gamblers may look like in the coming months.
Boosting the Casino Industry Will Take Time
When iconic Vegas Casinos like Bellagio and New York-New York were forced to shut down as COVID-19 cases continued to rise, the Nevada casino industry had to lay off over 200,000 employees, and revenue took an immediate hit.
The casino industry is lucrative, particularly in cities like Las Vegas and a livelihood for thousands. Some analysts estimate that even when in-house casinos will be able to open back up to full capacity (if that’s possible), the three-month shutdown will take years to recover.
Currently, most in-house casinos that are reopening are only able to operate at 50% capacity. So while that continues to affect careers for thousands, what does it mean for you the gambler?
Distancing and Less Crowded Tables
Some people love the “hustle and bustle” of in-house casinos with the bright lights, and people crowded around tables. If you’re the type of person who loves a packed house, you might have a difficult time adjusting to new guidelines.
On top of limited capacity, safe distancing will be key. Games will be spaced out, the number of people crowded around a blackjack table or other popular games will be limited, and you can expect that you won’t be elbow to elbow with someone at the slots. If you’re worried about a lackluster experience, that depends on your expectations, but most casino workers are excited to be back at work.
Safety First
While there’s some controversy and “flip-flop” decisions about whether or not masks will be required in Nevada casinos (as well as others across the US), masks are likely to be strongly recommended for quite some time. Don’t be surprised by plexi-glass guards or dividers or getting your temperature taken before you enter the casino.
More Things To Consider as Casinos Reopen
If you’re a long-time and frequent in-house casino gambler, you’re probably excited to get back to the poker table or roulette wheel. Keep in mind that it may be months or even years before your favorite casino bounces back to normal. Here are a few things to remember as casinos reopen:
- Stay up-to-date on the news concerning COVID-19 as guidelines may change unexpectedly
- Bring a face mask to the casino
- Always wash your hands or use hand sanitizer
- If you feel ill, don’t visit the casino
