“I am a six-year breast cancer survivor. I know what it feels like to not have hair, or thin hair…to not feel pretty,” Kisha Chase says. These may be heart-rending words, but they are also charged with courage and positivity.
Globally, cancer is the second leading cause of death. According to a study, this disease accounts for 1 in 6 deaths around the world. Kisha Chase, who is known as KishaOnFleek, noticed a lump under her arm in June of 2015. It was first diagnosed as an infection so she received antibiotics, but her gut told her that it was more than an infection, knowing that her mother and grandmother died from cancer.
Two weeks later, the lump grew into a size of a plum, so Kisha Chase went back to the doctor. She insisted that the doctor must diagnose her properly through a mammogram. After conducting the two tests, she received negative results from both tests. But she was not confident about the result, so she suggested that the doctor do a biopsy, which is taking a sample of tissue from the body to examine the tissue more closely. The result was carcinoma, and that moment her life has changed.
The challenges in her life began not by starting for the treatment but by locating where the cancer was. So the doctor told her that she needed to see a specialist, an oncologist. From there, the oncologist told her that she has triple-negative breast cancer. Triple-negative breast cancer is more aggressive and has a worse prognosis than other forms of breast cancer, primarily because there are less targeted therapies that treat triple-negative breast cancer.
“He told me that I needed to do eight sessions of chemotherapy,” she says. After the four sessions, the doctor changed her sessions from eight down to six, and she had to have surgery. “I did my session, and I had a mastectomy. Then, I had to do thirty radiation treatments which burned me very bad.” There she thought that her life would never be the same again.
Instead of wallowing in pity, she decided to turn the bad into good. Kisha Chase founded a non-profit organization named Triple Negative Wont Win (TNWW). TNWW offers support to patients with cancer and their families during and after treatment. When Kisha Chase has the money, she helps with clothes, food, electricity, and wigs. She also has her line of hair products to help her hair grow and keep it protected. Kisha Chase’s products provide excellent quality by making the hair smell good and look good. Also, Kisha Chase also provides other products such as eyelashes and lip gloss.
“I survived it, and I want others to know what they can do to possibly beat this particular cancer,” she says. The key to surviving, and most of all thriving, from this kind of cancer, or any other diseases, is about identifying and treating it earlier. Channeling positivity is also important. Kisha Chase did not allow the triple-negative to affect her life; instead, she makes the most of her life as she steps away from the negativity.
